And it don’t stop.

In Uncategorized on November 3, 2010 at 10:32 pm

Let’s just skip, hop and jump over the big chunk of time between this post and last, shall we? Safe to say it was a wonderful (emphasis on FULL) summer, and its been a crazy-awesome (emphasis on CRAZY) fall so far. But this packed schedule is the apple that’s keeping the senioritis away.

Things that’ve been keeping me from, you know, telling you what I’m up to?

1. Gauge Magazine and it’s brand spankin’ new website knowgaugebetter.com, which I would love for you to check out right here. Meredith Pomeroy is our web designer and a good friend of mine, and I couldn’t have picked anyone better to make our site come to life. Look forward to the issue, which’ll be up there in December, but in the meantime, get daily dispatches from the blog five days a week, edited by yours truly.

2. Ted Gup. As in, the former Time magazine editor, Washington Post-er, three-time author, chair of Emerson’s journalism department, and my professor.  His Deep Reporting class is changing my life and the way I look at reporting. So far, I’ve found out more about my family history than any of my grandparents were able to tell me, investigated the potential health implications of genetically engineered salmon, and for my latest assignment, going not-so-undercover at Boston’s only known Bear bar (no, not the animal) the Alley.

3. Columns! Yep, I’m trying my hand at being a columnist, in Jeff Seglin‘s column writing seminar. It’s been a weird switch writing about myself instead of other people, though I’m right at home working on my latest piece, a reported column about the growing popularity of poutine (my hometown culinary love) in America. I just interviewed Poutine Guy himself, whose true identity I won’t reveal here — you’ll have to wait for the column.

4. Dance. I’m choreographing an ode to Boston in hip-hop form for Emerson Dance Company, as well as dancing in three other pieces — one hip-hop and two contemporary. I’m also officially a member of Emerson Stage as part of the cast of X-Dance, a super-cool experimental dance performance that goes up in February at the Greene Theater.

So, that’s where I’m at. There, and saving up some money for what will most likely be my Big New York Migration come the summer. Oh, and trying to have fun and enjoy Boston and my friends every once in a while I’ve still got the whole college kid thing going for me. That too.

Eastie Eating

I just got back from an awesome Saturday afternoon adventure with Jess Alpert, one of my wonderful producers at WBUR. We blue lined it out to East Boston to take our own culinary tour of the neighborhood, which is probably one of the most diverse in Boston, and talked to chefs and owners at a bunch of different restaurants, from Italian to El Salvadoran to Vietnamese (yep, there’s just one vietnamese restaurant in Eastie, and we found it…along with its adorable, incredibly hard-working owner, Hoa.)

Now, its back to the drawing board (or the audio software, rather) — Jess and I are each going to work on our own versions of the story and compare notes, and hopefully have the piece ready to go by next week. I will keep you posted on when it airs…I’m pretty sure it’ll be drool-worthy.

Best Schools and B-Girls

In Uncategorized on July 12, 2010 at 1:58 pm

It’s been a busy summer so far, that’s for sure. I’ve run around and covered everything from upscale bike stores in Lexington to the beginning of Boston’s annual Pride parade to the heat wave that’s been shimmering over the city for about a week now. Here’s whats on my plate for the coming week:

  • I’m working on LOTS of research for Boston Magazine’s Best School’s issue, from MCAs scores to extracurricular activities.
  • I just booked a segment for WBUR about a tour company that gives culinary tours of East Boston.
  • I’m in the process of hunting down what is apparently a very vibrant but very underground b-girl culture in Boston for a possible web story for Radio Boston. I am definitely going to ask them to teach me everything they know when I track them down.
  • FINALLY getting out on a sailboat – I’m not letting this heat keep me from gliding along the Charles anymore.

What I’m Up To

In Uncategorized on June 20, 2010 at 11:49 pm

Nothing like muggy weather and a membership to community boating to make it feel like a Boston summer!

I’ve started my two internships – one as an editorial intern at Boston Magazine, the other at NPR affiliate WBUR as the web intern for Radio Boston, their local news show. They’re both incredibly different experiences, which is great because I’m learning so much about both magazines and radio already (most notably, how to work a Marantz audio recorder while juggling a digital SLR camera. Check out the results here).

When I’m not helping put out a magazine or get a daily local news show on air, I’m trying to soak up the whole New England Summer Experience (yes, I think it deserves capital letters), from visiting with family in Stowe, VT to taking a last-minute weekend camping trip to Provincetown on the Cape to eating as much tart frozen yogurt as humanly possible.

If you have any destination suggestions or story pitches, please throw them my way! Thanks for stopping by the site.
